Most visitors know Shigar for its famous fort, but the valley itself, roughly 32km from Skardu, is worth a full day (or more) on its own merits.
A half-day covers the fort and cold desert comfortably. A full day lets you add the Amburiq Mosque and a slower walk through the orchard villages, worthwhile if you're not rushing between Skardu's other major sights.
April for blossoms, late September for golden foliage, or a light dusting of winter snow on the cold desert dunes for a genuinely unusual photo. Shigar is accessible essentially year-round, unlike Deosai.
Every one of our core itineraries includes Shigar Fort; ask your guide to build in extra time for the cold desert and mosque if the valley itself interests you beyond the fort.
