Shangrila Resort Skardu, Is It Actually Worth Visiting?

Shangrila Resort, on Lower Kachura Lake, is probably the single most photographed spot in Gilgit-Baltistan. It's also become something of a tourism cliché, so is it actually worth the hype?

What it gets right

The lake setting really is as striking in person as in photos, and the famous airplane restaurant, a decommissioned PIA aircraft repurposed as a dining space, is a genuinely fun, memorable spot for a meal. The gardens are well-maintained and the whole property has a relaxed, resort-like feel that's rare elsewhere in the region.

What to expect realistically

It gets busy in peak season (June to August), particularly around midday when day-trip groups from Skardu city arrive. If you want the quieter, more photogenic version, aim for early morning or a sunset visit instead.

Yes, it's worth visiting, but treat it as a highlight stop within a broader itinerary rather than the singular reason for your trip. Pair it with the quieter Upper Kachura Lake nearby (a short hike or drive away) for contrast, it has similarly striking water without the crowds.
