Islamabad to Skardu Road Guide, Route, Stops and Timing

If you've decided to drive from Islamabad to Skardu, here's exactly what that journey looks like in practice.

The route

Islamabad → Karakoram Highway → Chilas → Indus gorge road → Skardu. Total distance is roughly 480km, but mountain roads mean this isn't a highway-speed drive, realistically 2 full days rather than one long push.

Day 1: Islamabad to Chilas

The KKH climbs north through increasingly dramatic scenery, with your first real Nanga Parbat viewpoints appearing as you approach Chilas. Most travelers overnight here rather than pushing straight through.

Day 2: Chilas to Skardu

Continue along the KKH before turning off onto the Skardu road, following the Indus gorge for the final stretch into town. This section has some narrower, rougher sections than the main KKH itself.

Road conditions

Generally well-maintained on the main KKH, with rougher patches on the final Skardu approach. Landslide-related closures happen periodically, particularly after monsoon rain (July to August) or early-season snowmelt, check conditions before you travel in shoulder seasons.

What to expect along the way

• Multiple Nanga Parbat viewpoints, especially around Chilas
• Basic but adequate rest stops and dhabas (roadside eateries) along the route
• Patchy mobile signal for long stretches, download offline maps in advance
• Fuel stations spaced further apart than on the plains, don't let your tank run low
