Is Skardu Safe? An Honest Local Perspective for 2026

πŸ“… Apr 20, 2026 Β· ⏱ 2 min read

This is one of the first questions almost every prospective visitor asks, and it deserves an honest, non-defensive answer.

The short version

Skardu and the wider Gilgit-Baltistan region have a genuinely different security profile from the parts of Pakistan that make international headlines. The local economy depends heavily on tourism, communities are welcoming, and violent crime against travelers is rare.

What actually requires caution

The real risks in Skardu are environmental, not human: altitude, mountain roads, and weather. Landslide-prone stretches of road (especially after heavy rain), altitude effects on the Deosai plateau, and cold-weather exposure in winter are all more relevant than personal safety concerns.

Sensible precautions

  • Travel with a licensed local guide, especially for 4x4 routes like Deosai
  • Check road conditions before road-tripping in shoulder seasons (April to May, October to November)
  • Keep copies of your ID/passport, and register your trip with your embassy if traveling internationally
  • Respect local customs, particularly around dress and photography of local people

We've been operating tours in this region since 2013 and the honest pattern we see is: people arrive slightly nervous and leave surprised by how relaxed and welcoming the whole experience was.
