Internet & SIM Cards in Skardu, Staying Connected in the Mountains

Connectivity in Skardu is better than many travelers expect in the main town, and considerably worse than expected once you head into the valleys.

Which networks work

SCOM (Special Communications Organization) has the most reliable coverage throughout Gilgit-Baltistan, since it was built specifically for the region's terrain. Major national networks (Jazz, Zong, Telenor) work in Skardu city but drop out quickly outside it.

Getting a SIM

The easiest option is buying a local SIM at Islamabad Airport on arrival, with your passport for registration. SCOM SIMs are also available in Skardu city itself if you're arriving by road.

Where you'll lose signal

Expect no signal at all in Deosai National Park, on most of the Khaplu and Astore roads, and in remote side valleys like Basho or Nagma. Hotels in Skardu city and Shigar generally have working WiFi, though speeds are modest by international standards.

Practical tip

Download offline maps before you travel, and let family or friends know you may be unreachable for a day or two during Deosai or Khaplu excursions, it's completely normal here, not a sign of a problem.
