Planning Your Trip

There are really only two ways to physically reach Skardu, by air or by road, but the right choice depends heavily on where you're starting from and how much time you have.
Skardu Airport receives flights from Islamabad (PIA and Airblue, under an hour, the most direct route). Lahore and Karachi travelers must connect through Islamabad, there's no direct service from either city. All Skardu flights are visual-approach and weather-dependent, so build in schedule flexibility.
The full Karakoram Highway route from Islamabad takes roughly 2 days of driving each way, via Chilas and the Indus gorge, genuinely one of the world's great road journeys. From Lahore or Karachi, this extends further still, since you first need to reach Islamabad by road or air before joining the KKH north.
If your trip is a week or less, fly at least one leg. If you have 10+ days and want the full experience, drive at least one direction, the KKH views are worth it once.
