Deosai National Park, Everything You Need to Know

Deosai National Park is one of the most singular landscapes in Pakistan, a vast, treeless plateau at 4,114m, covering over 3,000 square kilometres, that turns into an endless carpet of wildflowers every summer. It's also one of the last strongholds of the Himalayan brown bear in South Asia.

Getting there

Deosai is reached by 4x4 from Skardu, via Satpara Lake, in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to the park boundary. The road is unpaved but manageable in a proper 4x4; regular cars cannot make the journey.

When to visit

The park is only accessible from around June to September, it's completely snowed in and closed the rest of the year. Late June through July is peak wildflower season; August and early September offer the best wildlife-spotting light and thinner crowds.

What to see

• Sheosar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the region, with striking blue-green water
• Wildflower meadows, best in late June/July
• Himalayan brown bears, most active at dawn and dusk; sightings are never guaranteed but June to August offers the best odds

What to pack

Even in summer, Deosai's temperature can swing from warm sun to near-freezing wind within an hour. Bring a proper windproof layer, sunscreen (the high-altitude sun is intense), and drink more water than feels necessary, mild altitude effects are common at 4,114m even for otherwise fit travelers.
