Nature & Seasons

We get asked "when's the best time to visit?" more than almost any other question, and the honest answer depends on what you're prioritizing. Here's how we'd actually recommend it.
Choose summer (June to August). Every road and pass is open, including Deosai National Park at its greenest. This is peak season for a reason, but expect more crowds and higher hotel prices.
Choose spring, specifically April. Shigar Valley's cherry and apricot orchards bloom for a short, spectacular window, and you'll share the region with far fewer other travelers. Deosai will still be closed though.
Choose autumn, specifically September. Golden poplar foliage, thinning summer crowds, softer hotel prices, and Deosai typically stays open until early October.
Choose winter (December to February). Deosai and Khaplu's road are closed, but snow-dusted Shangrila and an empty Skardu Bazaar offer a completely different, quieter side of the region most visitors never see.
If this is your first Skardu trip and you want to see everything without compromise, go in June or early July, late enough for Deosai to be fully open, early enough to beat the peak-August crowds.
