A complete ten day Skardu road journey from Islamabad with safe overnight stops on both sides of the Karakoram Highway. The itinerary allows six useful sightseeing days in Baltistan while avoiding an unsafe single day return drive. It covers the Kachura lakes, Deosai, Shigar, Khaplu, Basho Valley, Katpana and Skardu city at a comfortable shared group pace.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1, Islamabad to Chilas
Morning departure from Islamabad. Travel along the Karakoram Highway through Besham and the Indus gorge. Overnight in Chilas.
Day 2, Chilas to Skardu
Continue beside the Indus with a stop at the Nanga Parbat viewpoint and the junction of three mountain ranges. Reach Skardu by evening.
Day 3, Shangrila and Kachura Lakes
Visit Lower Kachura at Shangrila Resort, Upper Kachura Lake, Soq Valley and the Skardu bazaar.
Day 4, Deosai National Park
Full day jeep excursion to Deosai, Sheosar Lake and Bara Pani, subject to seasonal road access.
Day 5, Shigar Valley and Katpana
Explore Shigar Fort, Amburiq Mosque, the cold desert and nearby village landscapes.
Day 6, Khaplu Valley
Drive along the Shyok River to Khaplu Palace, Chaqchan Mosque and Manthoka Waterfall.
Day 7, Basho Valley
Jeep excursion through pine forest and riverside scenery to the Basho meadows, with time for short walks.
Day 8, Skardu City and Satpara
Visit Satpara Lake, Manthal Buddha Rock, Kharpocho Fort viewpoint and the local market.
Day 9, Skardu to Chilas
Begin the return journey through the Indus gorge and stay overnight in Chilas.
Day 10, Chilas to Islamabad
Complete the Karakoram Highway drive and arrive in Islamabad by evening.
