Kharmang

Kharmang is a district and valley stretching along the old Skardu-Kargil road, historically one of the five traditional valleys of Baltistan alongside Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu and Rondu. It’s best known today as the home of both Manthoka and Khamosh Waterfalls, along with extensive apricot orchards that make it a beautiful stop during blossom or harvest season.

Historical Significance

As one of Baltistan’s five traditional valleys, Kharmang carries historical weight beyond its modern role as a waterfall destination — it sits along what was historically part of the route connecting Baltistan to Kargil (now in Indian-administered Kashmir), a route with centuries of trade and cultural exchange history that predates the current political boundaries in the region.

What’s in Kharmang District

Beyond its two famous waterfalls, Kharmang district encompasses extensive apricot orchards across its villages, particularly beautiful during April blossom or August harvest season. The district’s agricultural character, similar to other Baltistan valleys but with its own distinct village architecture and terracing patterns, rewards visitors who take time to look beyond just the waterfall stops.

Visiting Kharmang as Part of a Wider Trip

Most visitors experience Kharmang as an extension of a Khaplu Valley trip, continuing further along the Skardu-Kargil road rather than visiting as a separate standalone destination. Given the distance involved (well beyond Khaplu’s already substantial 103km from Skardu), an overnight stay in Khaplu before continuing into Kharmang the following day is the more comfortable approach than attempting a same-day round trip from Skardu itself.

Best Time to Visit

April for apricot blossom, May through October for the most reliable waterfall flow and road conditions, and August specifically for apricot harvest season, when the district’s orchards are at their most productive and visually striking.
