Manthoka Waterfall

Manthoka Waterfall is one of the most striking natural sights in Kharmang district — water plunges roughly 180 feet down a stepped rock face into the valley below, fed by glacier melt from the surrounding Karakoram peaks. A wooden viewing platform and small footbridges let visitors get close to the spray without a difficult hike, making it one of the more accessible dramatic natural sights in the wider Skardu region.

Getting There

Manthoka sits beyond Khaplu town on the road toward Kharmang district, roughly 103km and 3-4 hours from Skardu city via Khaplu. The route itself is part of the appeal — the Shyok River drive out to Khaplu, followed by the continuation into Kharmang, passes through some of the most dramatic gorge scenery in Baltistan, with the waterfall serving as a natural highlight and rest stop along the way rather than a destination requiring a special separate trip.

The Viewing Experience

Unlike many waterfalls that require a strenuous hike to appreciate properly, Manthoka’s wooden platform and footbridges bring visitors close to the base of the falls with minimal effort, making it accessible to a wide range of fitness levels and ages. The spray from the falls creates a noticeably cooler microclimate right at the viewing area — a welcome relief on a hot summer day, and part of why the surrounding tea stalls have become such a popular picnic and rest stop for travelers making the longer journey into Kharmang.

Seasonal Transformation

Water flow is at its heaviest and most dramatic in summer, roughly June through August, as snowmelt from higher elevations feeds the falls at their peak volume. By autumn, the flow noticeably reduces, offering a gentler, quieter version of the same sight. Winter transforms Manthoka most dramatically of all: sections of the waterfall freeze into striking ice formations, drawing photographers and winter travelers specifically for this very different seasonal character — a version of Manthoka that most summer visitors never see.

Combining with Khamosh Waterfall and Kharmang

Most visitors treat Manthoka as part of a wider Kharmang district excursion, combining it with the lesser-known, quieter Khamosh Waterfall in nearby Hamzigon village. Both waterfalls sit within a similar drive time of each other, and the wider Kharmang district’s apricot orchards — spectacular in April blossom or August harvest — round out what’s typically treated as a full-day or overnight extension of a Khaplu Valley trip rather than a standalone excursion from Skardu.

Practical Tips

Bring a light waterproof layer if you plan to get close to the base of the falls, since the spray carries further than it appears from a distance, especially in peak summer flow. The tea stalls near the parking area offer basic refreshments, but this isn’t the place to rely on for a full meal — pack accordingly if making the full day trip from Skardu.
