Skardu by Motorcycle β€” Routes, Tips and What to Expect

March 25, 2026 Β· 11 min read

The ride to Skardu along the Karakoram Highway is on plenty of “greatest motorcycle roads in the world” lists, and for good reason β€” but it’s a serious undertaking, not a casual weekend ride.

The route

From Islamabad, the standard route runs via the KKH to Chilas, then follows the Indus gorge road into Skardu β€” roughly 480km and, realistically, two full riding days rather than one, given road conditions and altitude.

Road conditions

The KKH itself is well-paved for most of its length, but the final stretch into Skardu has rougher, narrower sections, and landslide-related closures happen periodically, especially after monsoon rains (July–August) or early-season snowmelt.

What to bring

  • A bike in good mechanical condition β€” repair shops thin out significantly past Chilas
  • Proper cold-weather riding gear, even in summer β€” mountain passes get cold fast
  • Extra fuel capacity β€” stations are more spread out than on the plains
  • A physical map or offline GPS β€” mobile signal drops out for long stretches

Best time to ride

May through September offers the most reliable conditions. Winter riding is possible but genuinely risky given snow and ice on higher sections, and we don’t recommend it for anyone without serious mountain-riding experience.

If you’d rather not ride solo, we can arrange a support vehicle to shadow a motorcycle group with spare fuel, tools and a driver familiar with the route.
