Shangrila Resort Skardu β€” Is It Actually Worth Visiting?

July 1, 2026 Β· 7 min read

Shangrila Resort, on Lower Kachura Lake, is probably the single most photographed spot in Gilgit-Baltistan. It’s also become something of a tourism clichΓ© β€” so is it actually worth the hype?

What it gets right

The lake setting really is as striking in person as in photos, and the famous airplane restaurant β€” a decommissioned PIA aircraft repurposed as a dining space β€” is a genuinely fun, memorable spot for a meal. The gardens are well-maintained and the whole property has a relaxed, resort-like feel that’s rare elsewhere in the region.

What to expect realistically

It gets busy in peak season (June–August), particularly around midday when day-trip groups from Skardu city arrive. If you want the quieter, more photogenic version, aim for early morning or a sunset visit instead.

Our honest take

Yes, it’s worth visiting β€” but treat it as a highlight stop within a broader itinerary rather than the singular reason for your trip. Pair it with the quieter Upper Kachura Lake nearby (a short hike or drive away) for contrast β€” it has similarly striking water without the crowds.

Every one of our Skardu tours includes Shangrila as a stop; ask your guide about timing your visit for early morning or sunset if crowds are a concern.
