Khaplu sits about 103km from Skardu along the Shyok River, and the drive there is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself.
What to see
- Khaplu Palace (Fort Residence) — a former royal residence, now a Serena heritage hotel, open to day visitors even if you’re not staying overnight
- Chaqchan Mosque — one of the oldest mosques in the region, blending Tibetan, Kashmiri and Central Asian architectural influences
- Manthoka Waterfall — a roughly 180-foot cascade a short drive beyond Khaplu town, with a wooden viewing platform
- The Shyok River drive itself — dramatic gorge scenery for the full journey out
Should you stay overnight?
Khaplu works well as a full-day trip from Skardu, but staying one night at Khaplu Fort Residence lets you experience the palace without the day-trip crowds, and catch the valley in early morning light.
Practical notes
The road is in good condition but adds real driving time — budget a full day if going and returning to Skardu the same day. Combine with Manthoka Waterfall as a natural stop on the way back.
