The trek to K2 Base Camp is one of the most demanding β and most rewarding β treks in the world, and it deserves realistic expectations before you commit.
The basics
The trek starts from Askole (reached by 4×4 from Skardu) and typically takes 7β9 days each way, following the Baltoro Glacier past Concordia β arguably the single most dramatic mountain amphitheater on Earth, with four of the world’s fourteen 8,000m peaks visible at once.
Fitness and acclimatisation
You don’t need mountaineering experience, but you do need genuine cardiovascular fitness β this is multiple consecutive days of 5β7 hour hiking at altitudes climbing past 5,000m. Build up hiking stamina for at least 2β3 months beforehand, and take acclimatisation days seriously; altitude sickness, not physical exhaustion, is what ends most attempts early.
Permits and logistics
K2 Base Camp treks require porters, a trekking permit, and typically a full support crew (cook, guide, porters) since this is a genuine wilderness route with no villages or resupply points along the way.
A typical day
Early start, 5β7 hours of walking on glacier moraine and rock, a packed lunch en route, and camp set up by the crew ahead of your arrival at the next site. Evenings are cold even in peak season (JulyβAugust), and a good sleeping bag rated well below freezing is essential.
This is a serious undertaking best done with an experienced operator β check our Treks page for our K2 Base Camp itinerary and support-crew details.
