Hunza vs Skardu β€” Which Should You Visit First?

July 2, 2026 Β· 10 min read

This is probably the most common planning question we get from first-time Gilgit-Baltistan visitors, and honestly, there’s no wrong answer β€” but there are real differences worth knowing.

Scenery

Hunza offers dramatic, accessible valley views (Baltit Fort, Attabad Lake, Passu Cones) largely visible from the road itself. Skardu’s best sights β€” Deosai, Khaplu, the Kachura Lakes β€” often require more active exploration, but the payoff (a 4,114m wildflower plateau, for instance) is harder to match.

Accessibility

Hunza is easier to reach and get around β€” the KKH runs right through the valley, and most sights are close together. Skardu requires more internal travel between spread-out attractions.

Crowds

Hunza has historically drawn more tourist traffic and can feel busier in peak season, particularly around Karimabad. Skardu, while growing fast in popularity, still has quieter corners.

Our honest recommendation

If you only have a week, pick one rather than rushing both. If you have 10+ days, our Skardu Gilgit Hunza Tour combines both regions in a single circuit, so you don’t have to choose β€” you’ll get a genuine feel for how the two compare rather than relying on someone else’s opinion.
