For a couple of weeks every spring, the orchards around Skardu, Shigar and Khaplu erupt into pink and white cherry and apricot blossom, set against bare granite peaks that still carry a dusting of winter snow. It’s one of the shortest, most photogenic windows on the Gilgit-Baltistan calendar — and one of the easiest to miss if you don’t time it right.
When exactly does it bloom?
Blossom timing shifts slightly year to year depending on winter snowfall, but it typically peaks in the first two to three weeks of April. Shigar Valley tends to bloom a few days ahead of Skardu city itself, so if you visit right at the start of April, plan a Shigar detour into your itinerary.
Best places to see it
- Shigar Valley — the most concentrated orchards, especially around Shigar Fort
- Skardu city outskirts — Chunda Valley and the roadside orchards near Katpana
- Khaplu Valley — a quieter, less-visited blossom backdrop around Khaplu Palace
How to plan around it
Because the window is short and popular, hotels in Skardu city book up fast in early April. If blossom season is the main reason for your trip, book your dates and hotel at least a month in advance. Pack layers — April mornings are still cold (0–8°C) even though afternoons warm up nicely, and bring a proper camera if you can; phone cameras struggle with the high-contrast light of snow peaks behind blossoms.
