Manthal Buddha Rock
8th-Century Carved Heritage Site
ArchaeologyHistoryEasy Day TripOfficial GB Heritage Site
Manthal Buddha Rock is one of Baltistan’s most significant archaeological sites โ a large rock face in Manthal village, near Satpara Dam, carved with a monumental Buddha sculpture probably dating to the 8th century. The Buddha is flanked by two bodhisattva figures (Mitriya), with a surrounding composition of 21 disciples carved into the same rock face. Balti inscriptions are visible at the base.
The carving is a rare, tangible reminder that Baltistan was a significant Buddhist region for centuries before Islam became the predominant faith.
