Skardu city functions as a hub, with a genuinely large number of side valleys radiating outward in every direction — some minutes away, others a full day’s 4×4 journey. This is a complete distance reference for the valleys that make up the region, from the well-known to the genuinely obscure. Times are approximate under normal conditions — unpaved sections, weather and seasonal snowmelt all affect actual travel time, particularly for the 4×4-only valleys.
Grouping the Valleys by Effort Required
Easy — No Special Planning Needed
Chunda and Nagma Valleys sit close enough to Skardu city that they work as spontaneous half-day additions to any itinerary, reachable by regular car with no advance arrangement required.
Moderate — A Dedicated Half or Full Day
Shigar Valley, Basho Valley, Soq Valley and Khaplu Valley all sit within a comfortable half-to-full day round trip, and make up the core of most standard Skardu itineraries. Shigar and Khaplu in particular are paved-road destinations suitable for any vehicle.
Serious — 4×4 Required, Full Day or Overnight
Tormik Valley, Balamik Valley and Machulu require real off-road capability and a longer time commitment, typically best combined with an overnight in Khaplu or Skardu city rather than attempted as a rushed same-day round trip from the city centre.
Remote — Multi-Day, Permits or Genuine Wilderness Access
Hushe Valley, Kharmang, and Minimarg/Domail sit at the far end of the effort spectrum — Hushe and Kharmang both benefit from an overnight stay in Khaplu rather than a same-day return, while Minimarg and Domail require border-area permits and are only reachable by 4×4 via the Astore District route.
Planning Multiple Valleys in One Trip
Because several of these valleys sit along the same routes, combining them is often more efficient than treating each as a separate excursion. Shigar Valley and Basho Valley both work well as standalone Skardu-city day trips. Khaplu, Machulu, Hushe and Kharmang all sit along the same eastward route and combine naturally into a 2-3 day Khaplu-based extension.
