Money logistics in Skardu are simpler than many first-time visitors expect, but a little planning avoids awkward moments.
ATMs
ATMs exist in Skardu city but with limited cash availability at times, especially in peak season. Don’t rely on being able to withdraw a large sum on demand — withdraw what you need in Islamabad before heading north where possible.
Card acceptance
Major hotels increasingly accept credit and debit cards (we do too, alongside JazzCash, EasyPaisa and bank transfer for bookings), but most restaurants, local shops, and the bazaar are cash-only.
How much cash to carry
For a week-long trip, carrying enough PKR to cover meals, shopping and incidentals — separate from any pre-paid tour costs — is the safest approach. Foreign visitors should exchange USD to PKR at a bank or official exchange office rather than informally.
Tipping
Tipping guides and drivers is customary and appreciated, though not strictly obligatory — a modest tip reflecting your group size and trip length is standard practice.
