This is one of the first practical decisions every Skardu traveler faces, and there’s a genuinely honest trade-off either way.
Flying
Pros: Saves roughly two full travel days each way; the short flight itself, on a clear day, offers incredible aerial views of Nanga Parbat.
Cons: Skardu flights are visual (not instrument-guided) and weather-dependent — delays and cancellations happen, especially in winter and shoulder seasons. Book with some schedule flexibility.
Driving
Pros: The Karakoram Highway is genuinely one of the world’s great road journeys, passing Nanga Parbat viewpoints and the dramatic Indus gorge; far more reliable than flights, since road closures are rarer and more predictable than flight cancellations.
Cons: Roughly 2 full days of driving each way from Islamabad — a real time cost if your holiday is short.
Our honest recommendation
If you have 10+ days, drive at least one direction — the KKH views are worth experiencing at least once. If your trip is a week or less, fly both ways and put the saved days into Skardu itself. Many of our travelers do a hybrid: fly in, road-trip out (or vice versa), which is easy to arrange.
